The activities were part of the "Me Sumo" project, promoted by the renewable energy generator Latin America Power (LAP), the Environment Unit of the Municipality of Melipeuco and the National System of Environmental Certification of Educational Establishments (SNCAE).
A few days ago, 140 students from the Schools Escuela Volcán Llaima, Escuela 10 de Llaima, Escuela Caren, Cumcumllaque, San Gabriel y Liceo Los Andes de Melipeuco, participated in two days focused on promoting the conservation and care of the environment, within the framework of the International Water and Forest Days.
The conference was part of the "Me Sumo" project, a program promoted by Latin America Power, the Environment Unit of the Municipality of Melipeuco and the National System of Environmental Certification of Educational Establishments (SNCAE), which aims to promote the creation of different initiatives in favor of the community, including sustainable development in issues such as environmental education, economic productivity, tourism, and care for the environment.
In this regard, the Sustainability Manager of LAP, José Salgado, said that "having been present and seeing how these instances are valued by the students motivates us to continue strengthening the work we have developed in recent years together with the Environment Unit to the Municipality and the SNCAE. Although the project has already brought together various actors in the commune, our goal is for more and more institutions and organizations to join, in order to continue developing the entire commune of Melipeuco and its inhabitants, hand in hand with joint work within the framework of this public-private partnership."
During the activity held on March 21, the students visited the forest demonstration nursery of the commune, where they learned about the work carried out in this space, the various species of plants present in it, and a demonstration on the proper treatment of seeds and correct planting techniques.
They also received an explanation of the communal composting pilot project created under the framework of "Me Sumo", and how this process has made it possible to obtain high-quality compost for Melipeuco. At the same time, they watched a documentary about nature in the cinema of the Parador Turístico Araucaria Araucana.
Along these lines, the head of the Environment Unit of the Municipality of Melipeuco, Fabián Oñate, stressed that "we wanted to encourage reflection on the importance of forests, framed in the territorial relevance presented in the documentary, as well as highlight the connection between forests, human beings and Mapuche culture. In addition, it sought to encourage reforestation and the active preservation of these valuable natural resources."
In order to commemorate International Water Day, on March 22, the students of the Llaima Rural School N°10 participated in an activity in which they were presented with the animation "La Abuela Grillo", and the mini-documentary "The World Water Crisis".
As Oñate explained, "the main purpose of this activity was to promote a joint reflection between students and teachers on the vital importance of this natural resource."
It should be remembered that the Me Sumo project has been working in the area for two years and through the SNCAE program, it has environmentally certified eight schools in the commune.
